Sensitivity readers help writers in two ways: educating them about biases and making their book better. They are an extra set of an eyes on your manuscript before it goes out into the world, into the hands of readers.
I’ve been a reader of young-adult and adult books about mental illness ever since I became a reader. I’ve dealt with depression, anxiety, and body-focused repetitive disorders since I was a teen. I wrote an essay about my experience with trichotillomania for (Don’t) Call Me Crazy, a young-adult anthology about mental health.
Topics of focus
Mental health / mental illness / ableism — Commentary comes from my experience with mental illnesses, my knowledge from years of reading (fiction and non-fiction) about mental health, and my time of being a human in the world. I’ll point out any ableist language and suggest alternate ways of portraying mental illness with sensitivity.
Projects I dig
Contemporary young-adult novels, contemporary romance, adult memoirs, essay collections.
Rates start at $250 for manuscripts of 50,000-100,000 words.
